The trace mineral boron functions as an activator. Boron is one of the main minerals used during the bone building process. It initiates estrogen by assisting in converting vitamin D into an active state. Estrogen is then able to improve absorption of calcium. With proper mineral absorption, osteoporosis will not be a major factor in a person’s health. Once osteoporosis sets in, boron can play a major role in assisting the body in recovering lost calcium. All trace minerals, including boron, are vital in the stability and health of the entire body.
Strong Bones, Joints, Teeth, and Cell Walls
In addition to strengthening bones, boron assists in building strong joints and teeth. Boron is one of many minerals necessary for building and repairing joint cartilage. It is essential in maintaining balanced levels of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in the body. Boron aids in regulating hormones, especially estrogen and testosterone. It also helps in maintaining brain function and memory capabilities. Boron deficiency can cause cell walls to become very weak and fragile, rendering cells incapable of properly transferring nutrients into them. The body depends on boron for performing many major functions.
Clinical Studies Verify the Need for Boron
“Boronated compounds have been shown to be potent anti-osteoporotic, anti-inflammatory, hypolipemic, anti-coagulant and anti-neoplastic agents both in vitro and in vivo in animals.” 1 (Quoted directly from Trace Elements Medical Biology.)
- Anti-osteoporotic – Osteoporosis is an epidemic in the US among women and men. ” Osteoporosis and low bone mass are currently estimated to be a major public health threat for almost 44 million U.S. women and men aged 50 and older.”2 In areas where boron is deficient in the soil, the incidence of osteoporosis is high.
- Anti-inflammatory – “Worldwide, 3 of 5 people die due to chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.”3
- Hypolipemic – Lowering the fat circulating in the bloodstream (cholesterol) is essential. “71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol.”4
- Anti-coagulant – “Of the nearly 28 million prescriptions for blood thinners filled by pharmacists, 19.3 million were for generic blood thinners and 8.5 million were for brand-name drugs.”5
- Anti-neoplastic – Preventing the growth of tumors, is life-saving. Neoplasms (tumors) can be benign or malignant. Cancer is the term given to malignant tumor growth. “In 2017, 1,688,780 new cancer cases and 600,920 cancer deaths are projected to occur in the United States.”6
Boron aids in preventing chronic diseases by increasing the production of certain steroid hormones. When boron is increased in the diet, research verifies that estrogen, testosterone, and plasma ionized calcium levels increase, while vitamin D, magnesium, and calcium excretion decreases. This is great! All of these effects could have a profound influence on increasing bone mineral density, particularly in postmenopausal women.
“As the current article shows, boron has been proven to be an important trace mineral because it (1) is essential for the growth and maintenance of bone; (2) greatly improves wound healing; (3) beneficially impacts the body’s use of estrogen, testosterone, and vitamin D; (4) boosts magnesium absorption; (5) reduces levels of inflammatory biomarkers, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α); (6) raises levels of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase; (7) protects against pesticide-induced oxidative stress and heavy-metal toxicity; (8) improves the brains electrical activity, cognitive performance, and short-term memory for elders; (9) influences the formation and activity of key biomolecules, such as S-adenosyl methionine (SAM-e) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+); (10) has demonstrated preventive and therapeutic effects in a number of cancers, such as prostate, cervical, and lung cancers, and multiple and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; and (11) may help ameliorate the adverse effects of traditional chemotherapeutic agents. In none of the numerous studies conducted to date, however, do boron’s beneficial effects appear at intakes > 3 mg/d. No estimated average requirements (EARs) or dietary reference intakes (DRIs) have been set for boron—only an upper intake level (UL) of 20 mg/d for individuals aged ≥ 18 y.”7
Symptoms of Boron Deficiency
Symptoms of boron deficiency are arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, hormonal imbalance, loss of libido, memory loss, joint and muscle pain, osteoporosis, weak joint cartilage, and tooth decay. Boron deficiency causes increased amounts of calcium and magnesium to be lost in the urine because boron is needed by the parathyroid which regulates the blood calcium level. Daily boron supplementation may reduce the loss of calcium up to 50%.
Bone analysis has shown that arthritic joints and nearby bones have only half the boron content of healthy joints. Also, the synovial fluid (the fluid that lubricates joints and provides nutrients to cartilage) is deficient in boron in arthritic joints.
Sources of Boron
The most cost-effective source of boron is 20 Mule Team Borax which can be located in the detergent aisle at most grocery stores. Sodium Tetraborate is the chemical name for boron. Borax is a pure and natural form of boron mined directly from the earth. One-eighth of a teaspoon equals approximately 55 mg of boron. Dissolve this amount of Borax in a quart of hot water and and this will be about a week’s worth of supplemental boron, drinking one-half cup of this water per day. Store this mixture in the refrigerator and consume it throughout the week. Stir well before drinking.
